Gravity Probe B

Testing Einstein's Universe

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR WEEK ENDING 14 DECEMBER 2001:

ARPs INSTALLED ON SPACE VEHICLE
Initial alignment measurements between the GP-B Science Instrument and the Space Vehicle Attitude Reference Platforms (ARPs) have been completed. The Flight ARPs were installed on the Space Vehicle and their alignment cubes were "shot-in" relative to the Science Instrument reticle. This information is used for final alignment of the Space Vehicle Control Gyroscopes on the ARPs.

COMPLETED DEWAR TRANSFER TO 42% HE LEVEL
The cryogenics team has successfully completed the transfer of approximately 300 liters of liquid helium into the main tank of the GP-B dewar. The near term plan is to perform additional transfers to bring the level to somewhat above 60%. An anomaly related to the transfer is in-work. Our understanding is that this anomaly will cause no impact on service.

COMPLETED FINAL ADR FOR THE GP-B FLIGHT MECHANISMS
The Gravity Probe B Team successfully completed the Acceptance Data Review of the flight Solar Array Deployment Mechanisms on Thursday, December 6. This completes the Acceptance Data Reviews for all GP-B flight mechanisms.
