Driving Directions to Gravity Probe B Project at Stanford University

For specific directions from local airports, please see below. All maps courtesy of Stanford University's home page

From San Francisco International Airport:

Follow the airport signs to Highway 101 South (towards San Jose). Take Highway 101 South. After about 15 miles, leave the highway using the Embarcadero Road exit, and take the first possible turnoff, following the signs to Stanford University. Follow Embarcadero through El Camino Real where it becomes Galvez Street. From there, one should be able to find Gravity Probe B using the map of the general vicinity or the campus map (both provided above).

One may also take the University Avenue exit from Highway 101, which is just before the Embarcadero exit. This will take one through downtown Palo Alto, which, while being scenic, does have more traffic.

Rush Hour Traffic Alternative Route:

During peak traffic periods, we recommend that one not take Highway 101. These periods are usually between seven-thirty and nine-thirty in the morning and three-thirty and six-thirty in the evening on any weekday. Our suggested alternate route is as follows: Follow the airport signs to Highway 380 West, which later joins Highway 280. Once on 380, proceed for roughly 6 miles. Take the Highway 280 South exit and go down 280 for about 15 miles. From Highway 280, one can take either the Sand Hill Road or the Page Mill Road exit, head east and follow the signs toward Stanford University. From there, use the maps provided above.

From San Jose International Airport:

Follow the airport signs to Highway 87, Guadalupe Parkway North. Head away from downtown San Jose and take 87 to the Highway 101 North junction. Take Highway 101 North for about 15 miles to Embarcadero Road. Exit at Embarcadero and take the third turnoff within the exit (following the signs to Stanford). One should now be heading west. Alternatively, one could take the University Avenue exit (westbound) from Highway 101 (the exit after Embarcadero). This takes the driver through downtown Palo Alto, and it usually involves more traffic. Regardless of exit choice, one should be able to, at this point, find Gravity Probe B using the map of the general vicinity or the campus map (both provided above).

Rush Hour Traffic Alternative Route:

During peak traffic periods, we recommend that one not take Highway 101. These periods are usually between seven-thirty and nine-thirty in the morning and three-thirty and six-thirty in the evening on any weekday. Our suggested alternate route is as follows: Follow the airport signs to Highway 880 South towards Santa Cruz. Take 880 South to the 280 junction. Take 280 North (towards San Francisco). Stay on 280 for about 10 miles and take either the Page Mill Road or the Sand Hill Road exit. Head east on either road and follow the maps provided above.
