Gravity Probe B

Testing Einstein's Universe

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR WEEK ENDING 24 October 1997:

STANFORD HIGHLIGHT
Ted Acworth and Rob Bernier have successfully integrated the Artificial Star #3 (AS3) into the GTU-2 test system. Preliminary checks confirm the functionality of AS3. Optional GTU-2 tests, involving AS3 and telescope #1 are currently in progress.

SPACE VEHICLE HIGHLIGHT
Bellelville washer stacks called out in the Belleville Preload System (BPS) dewar "use-as-is" concept mechanism were stiffness (load versus deflection) tested over their expected operating displacements during the week of 17 October. The BPS mechanism, an addition to the Probe assembly, allows installation and preload of the Probe against the Dewar without actuation of the failed axial lock parts. The test results were excellent. The stack stiffnesses were as predicted, linear and repeatable. Friction hysteresis was very low. Detail design of the mechanism machined parts is underway, and parts for the engineering test bed are being machined. (Reeve, 4-5001)
