July 1990  Looking down through an airlock into the dewar. The crinkled silver material at the bottom is actually a super-thin lead foil bag, used to electro-magnetically isolate the main instrument package.  This is one of several expanding lead bags that line the cryogenic dewar. This non-flight bag was removed shortly after a series of thermal tests in the late 1980's. The extreme cold is vital to maintaining the superconducting environment of the gyroscopes.  Mac Keiser inspects a mock-up of the space vehicle.  The porous plug--invented at Stanford, this device allows evaporating helium gas to escape from the dewar, while retaining the superfluid liquid helium inside.
